Low Clearance Ahead!

Every RVer knows the feeling when a sign suddenly warns, “Low Clearance Ahead.” You check the height of your rig, slow down, and decide whether the road ahead is safe. Those signs aren’t there to spoil the journey. They’re there to protect us.

Life has warning signs too. In this episode of Travel With a Purpose, we look at what an RV clearance sign can teach us about wisdom, repentance, and paying attention to God’s guidance along the road of life. Sometimes traveling with purpose means recognizing when it’s time to choose another route.

Hello, fellow Stojojourners. I'm your host, Dave Leighton, and welcome to Travel with a Purpose, a podcast designed to keep Swjourners and friends informed, entertained, and inspired. In today's episode, we're talking about something every RVer eventually encounters, the dreaded sign that reads Low Clearance Ahead. For many RV travelers, those three words can cause your heart rate to jump just a little. But like so many moments on the road, this warning carries a lesson that reaches far beyond driving. If you travel long enough in an RV, sooner or later you'll see it. Now it might be a narrow road, maybe a bridge, maybe a tunnel. And posted clearly in a yellow sign are the words low clearance, eleven foot six inches. And if you're driving a fifth wheel or motor home that stands twelve and a half feet tall, suddenly you're going to be doing some fast thinking. You slow down, you start checking your GPS, you look for another route. Because if you ignore that sign, the consequences are severe, expensive, and embarrassing. Every year there are RVs, trucks, and campers that wedge themselves under bridges that are clearly marked. And it's not because the sign wasn't there. It was because someone thought maybe it'll be fine. Well, experienced RV travelers know something important. Those warning signs are not suggestions. They are protection. They are there because someone measured. Someone knew the danger. Someone wanted to prevent a disaster before it happened. When we respect those warnings, we avoid damage. When we ignore them, the results can be painful. You know life has something similar. God has placed warning signs all along the road of life. Scripture is full of them warnings about pride, warnings about temptation, warnings about destructive choices. Sometimes we see them clearly, and sometimes they come through wise counsel from a friend, a spouse, or a mentor. And sometimes the Holy Spirit quietly whispers, Don't go down that road. Well the problem is not that the warnings are unclear. The problem is that sometimes we think the same thing a careless driver thinks when approaching a low bridge. I can probably squeeze through. Proverbs fourteen twelve says there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is a way to death. That's pretty severe. Now in other words, not every road that looks good is safe to travel. Just like RV travelers have to know the measurements of their rig, believers need to know the condition of their heart. Some roads are too narrow for pride, some paths are too dangerous for compromise, and some environments will damage your faith if you try to force your way through. And God, in his mercy, places signs along the road, low clearance ahead. And seasoned RVers understand something. Sometimes the wisest move is simply to stop, back up, and choose another route. There is no shame in avoiding danger. And in fact, wisdom often looks like turning around before the disaster strikes. Spiritually speaking, that's exactly what repentance is. Repentance means changing direction. When we recognize that a path leads to harm, God invites us to turn around and find a better road. And He gives us that road. That's the beautiful thing about that. God always provides another route. When we travel with a purpose, we learn to pay attention. We watch the road, we read the signs, and we listen to wise counseling. And we trust the one who knows the road ahead better than we ever could. Well, the next time you're driving your RV and you see a bright yellow sign warning you about low clearance or narrow bridge, let it remind you of something deeper. God loves you enough to place warnings in your path, not to restrict, but to protect. Here's a question to reflect on this week. Are there any warning signs in my life that I've been ignoring? Maybe it's a habit. Maybe it's a relationship that needs strengthening. Maybe it's a direction that feels convenient, but isn't wise. God's warnings are not there to limit our journey.
